Rachel B. Aarons M.S.W. Ph.D. began her professional career as a philosopher. She was awarded numerous scholarships and fellowships including the prestigious Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship, the Horace B. Rackham Graduate Prize Fellowship, and the Canada Council Dissertation Fellowship. She completed her Doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Michigan in 1971 and then taught at the University of Toronto as a Lecturer and Assistant Professor of Philosophy from 1968 to 1973.

At this point, her career took a new direction. She received a Master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Toronto and completed a 3 year training program as a Gestalt therapist at the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Toronto. She opened a private practice in Toronto, Ontario which she maintained until she moved to Vancouver B.C. in 1978.  She was also trained by Virginia Satir as a conjoint family therapist and later became a Faculty member of the Northwest Satir Institute.

In Vancouver, B.C., Dr. Aarons founded and coordinated a women’s resource center and served as a career counsellor for Capilano University before she returned to private practice in Counselling and Hypnotherapy in 1984. 

Dr. Aarons moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1996 and was licensed as a Clinical Social Worker for the State of California (LCS 18298) in 1997. She was first trained in EMDR in 1998 and became certified as an EMDR therapist in 2004. She continued her practice as a therapist first under the auspice of the Family Therapy Institute of Santa Barbara and then founded her own private practice. For over forty years, Dr. Rachel Aarons has been a companion and guide to individuals and couples on their journeys to growth and healing.
